Mothers day bike gift

No painter’s brush, nor poet’s pen, in justice to her fame, has ever reached half high enough, to write a mother’s name. Author Unknown.

Social machinery: cycling has give this group of mums a good reason to get out and stay connected.

Mother’s Day a special day to remember we all have much to be thankful for “our mothers” and their tireless work and acts of selflessness. Was privileged to spend time with a group of mothers, who formed a bond with each other, around the time their children started attending school. Steve Covey coined the phrase “The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing.”

Sandra, Shirley, Leanne, Pam, Wendy, Sue and Leanne have kept their motherly instinct and the joy of sharing this journey together as one of the main things. Recently they found cycling together has become another pleasurable means and vehicle to enjoy each other’s company and stories of the progress of family relationships.

Their time blossomed when they as a group of young mums, decided to play married women’s netball (some still are playing in a social women’s competition) and the bond has never been weakened since. A few years ago as mother’s day present bikes were given to a couple of mums, some even thoughtful enough to be in the mum’s favourite colour purple.

There is no real pretence about their riding. There is no lycra and one mum said when we get to size 10 then maybe we will think about it; bringing lots of group laughter.

“A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones”
Proverbs 17:22.

Speed is not an agenda, it is easy as you go and falls have been a few this also accompanied with much laughter as some of these precious moments were brought to mind in great detail, but no broken bones or dented egos. Their budget is along the lines of as long as we get to the lake and get a coffee or hot chocolate off Nick their favourite Ultimate Coffee provider.

SMS messages start on a Saturday night ready for the Sunday morning gathering, making sure that each one will be ready to be on the bike as the group grows as they make their way along the linear path for the ritual loop of Roslyn Park through the Chinese Gardens and back to the Lake and their reserved park bench for some more in-depth reflections if required.

“A mother is the truest friend we have, when trials heavy and sudden, fall upon us; when adversity takes the place of prosperity; when friends who rejoice with us in our sunshine desert us; when trouble thickens around us, still will she cling to us, and endeavour by her kind precepts and counsels to dissipate the clouds of darkness, and cause peace to return to our hearts.”  Washington Irving

There is much chatter about many things, mostly encouraging and providing a listening ear of wisdom of a mother to another mother and friend with occasions of shared concerns filtered with tears of grief and joy.

“If you have a mom, there is nowhere you are likely to go where a prayer has not already been.”  Robert Brault.

There is no doubt that regular exercise has kept them healthy acknowledging being accountable to each other has kept the bond and prepared to expand their horizons. Their hope is that their experience will fuel others to come to a similar path of finding friendships rewards.

Looking forward to seeing you on the road soon God willing.
